For the first beauty post, I wanted to talk a little about my all-time favorite product: Gifted mascara by Tarte
Now, I’m typically one of those women who refuses to leave the house without my makeup fully done. Eyebrows on point, contouring the cheekbones, the works. BUT if there was ever some reason I didn’t have my hour to prepare, a little liquid foundation and this mascara would be my quick solution. And Gifted, from Tarte’s cosmetic line, is one of my makeup must-haves.
Now, with a lot of allergies, problematic foods often sneak themselves into our beauty product. Hand soap, lotions, shampoos, and even cosmetics are all prone to hidden ingredients. For myself, the corn, soy, gluten and dairy all pose serious enough issues that I must spend time looking over every ingredient (and often pulling my phone out to even see what half the crazy chemicals are derived from). I’ve luckily found a number of resources that break down the possible names for all the ingredients I should avoid, but let’s be real, we aren’t all that meticulous.
So, I’m here to give a shout-out to this mascara, that is not only cruelty-free and vegan, but is made mostly of clay. I’ll add the ingredients below for anyone who’s curious. Now I have fine eyelashes, and without a little help, they tend to disappear on my face. Mascara is one of those great products that can totally open up the look of your eyes and enhance your overall look, so it’s important to go for a mascara that doesn’t clump or flake off throughout the day. Also, a quick general mascara tip: when removing the wand from the tube, NEVER pump the wand, it allows air to get into the tube and dry up the mascara faster. Instead, slowly twist the wand to remove the excess mascara while removing it from the tube. If needed, gently dab the end of the bristles to the edge to remove any large globs that might’ve come out.
Pros: I have found that this mascara works best when applied in a few light coats, two or three for good coverage. I’ve never had any issues with it smudging, flaking, or clumping. It also does a great job of keeping the lashes separated and full. Also, aside from providing solid coverage, I feel that this mascara does a good job of keeping things looking more natural than some of those over-oily and slick looking ones. One final thing I love about this product is that it is gentle to your eyelashes; it comes off easy, doesn’t ruin your eyelashes in the process, and it contains vitamins to help condition while you wear it!
Cons: The only thing I’ve found with this mascara is that it does not hold up super well to water. Obviously being clay based, it is not going to last through a dip in the pool or a torrential downpour. However, when it comes to removing your makeup up at night, it comes off flawlessly unlike those stubborn oily/waterproof brands, and let’s be real, there is nothing more disappointing than trying to remove your mascara at the end of the day and seeing a few eyelashes in the bottom of the sink who couldn’t survive the diligent scrubbing to get rid of those black rings around your eyes.
Alright, I won’t blab anymore, but I’ve gotta give this product a 9/10 in the end. If I know I really need a waterproof mascara for some reason, I can slather on some for that particular use. But, for a great everyday product, this is a winner.
